In Focus
In Focus: Newcomer Experiences in Unama’ki – Cape Breton is a photo project that celebrates diversity and gives a window into the lives of Cape Bretoners who were born outside of Canada and now call the Island home. Each image reflects a personal experience — a place, object, person, or moment that has shaped their journey to and within Unama’ki – Cape Breton.
In early 2025, the Cape Breton Local Immigration Partnership (CBLIP) invited foreign-born residents to submit photos that represented their journey since arrival on the Island. Through these photos and stories, you are invited to see the Island through fresh eyes, and to reflect on ideas of belonging, home, and community. This exhibit is not only about sharing experiences, but about building bridges — creating space for understanding, empathy, and connection.
As you move through this gallery, take a moment to pause, reflect, and consider your own journey alongside those shared here.

Thank you for taking time to explore In Focus: Newcomer Experiences in Unama’ki – Cape Breton. These photos represent personal life experiences and are shared with the hope of fostering understanding and connection.
A few questions to reflect on:
- Do these images remind me of my own life? In what ways do I relate to the stories they tell?
- What do words like “belonging”, “community”, and “home” mean to me?
- How would I describe my own experiences of finding community?
- How might my neighbourhood feel through the eyes of someone new?
- In what ways do I help to foster a welcoming spirit in my community?
