Green Energy Sector
Green energy development will provide generational economic opportunities for Nova Scotia, especially in Unama’ki – Cape Breton. With an unprecedented interest in the region for the development of commercial offshore wind and green fuels production due to our natural resources, including world-class wind speeds, accessible freshwater supplies, and deep-water ports, we are at the forefront of this transformative green energy sector.
There is an urgency to decarbonize our electrical grid and Europe is facing an energy crisis, creating demand for secure green energy both domestically and for export. The development of green energy using existing technologies, such as onshore wind, solar, and geothermal heat, would help decarbonize our grid and contribute towards Nova Scotia’s goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and the phase out coal by 2030.
The deployment of existing green energy tech and the development of a new green energy sector centered around offshore wind and green fuels could provide meaningful employment, improve energy security and reliability, and bolster economic development in Unama’ki – Cape Breton. Economic reconciliation has been central to current and future projects with significant investments by, and equity partnerships with, Indigenous Communities in green energy projects. Unama’ki – Cape Breton’s workforce is historically centered around large-scale industry and marine sectors, meaning there is a skilled workforce ready to be deployed, with educational institutions preparing their curricula and conducting research to accommodate new and expanding green energy development.
There will be opportunities for investment in new green energy technology as well as diversification of current businesses to accommodate work focused on infrastructure upgrades, predevelopment studies, shipping and logistics, assembly and construction, as well as the operation and maintenance of sites and facilities. As we enter a new era of clean energy production, Unama’ki – Cape Breton is continuing its history as the energy-producing powerhouse for the province.
