There are a number of private training institutions filling niche-training markets for local industries. Ranging from environmental safety training and oil and gas certifications to health-related, legal and IT training, Cape Breton’s educational system offers robust and industry-relevant options.
CBBC Career College
With three locations in the CBRM, CBBC Career College has a variety of programs to offer students, including Cosmetology, Dental Assisting, Early Childhood Education, Pharmacy Assistant, and Medical Laboratory Assistant. Most of the courses offered are one year programs.

Maritime Environmental Training Institute (METI)
Located in Sydney, METI offers short courses that focus on job training. With courses including Class 1 Driver (Tractor Trailer), Construction Oilfield Driver, Oilfield and Construction Skilled Labourer, and Earthmoving Operator, there are lots of skills to be learned at METI. They also offer various kinds of safety training for any type of work place.
Canadian Coast Guard College
The Canadian Coast Guard College is a national maritime training facility located on the Sydney Harbour. It’s a national college that provides training and services in French and English. It delivers programs to support the College’s mission and mandate in marine safety, security and environmental protection.
The College offers programs in Marine Engineering, Marine Navigation, Electronics and Informatics Technical Training, and Marine Communications and Traffic Services.

Island Career Academy
Island Career Academy has a variety of industry-driven training programs. Most programs are one year, and include Community Residential Worker, Massage Therapy, Early Childhood Education, and Paralegal/Legal Assistant, among other courses. Many of their courses also have practicum requirements that may lead to employment for graduates.
